Bev Hempen Testimonial

Bev Hempen Testimonial

My husband and I recently updated our wills and have made Greenville College our primary designation. We have not had the blessing of having our own children, so it is important that we try to help those young people who would love a wonderful Christian education from Greenville College, but are unable to handle the costs. By our helping in this way, we feel like we're providing that opportunity for them to get this education, then, go out into the world and share the gospel of Jesus Christ. My husband and I can't think of a better place than Greenville to share God's blessings to us.

My own journey to Greenville College started young. I had watched my mother do the ironing many times over the years, but this particular day at the beginning of my 14th year was different. That was the first of many times that she brought up college, more specifically, where she wanted me to go: Greenville College. I had gone to GC for visits many times in the past while my cousin was a student there and had had a wonderful time with the whole experience. However, as I was beginning this new, exciting time of high school, college was not really on my thought-list. It was for my mother, though.

She was the third of nine children in her family and had only an eighth grade education. With so many children to care for, my grandmother needed her at home, so further education was not an option, even though my grandfather was a teacher. Actually, Mother was from a long line of teachers and, over the years, realized that that was my desire, too, to join this profession. She wanted that for me, more than anything. That desire only increased over the years and, ultimately, she began the process of helping me make plans for Greenville College.

Mother worked in a factory, as well as doing laundry and cleaning house for others, and was barely able to make enough money for our family, let alone pay for this type of education. There was no college fund waiting in the wings for me, so creativity had to play a part in this process. Thankfully, there were people at GC who knew how to manage situations such as mine. They allowed my mother to make multiple payments over the years and that, in addition to the money I earned working for Mrs. Green in the school cafeteria, enabled me to complete my four years and earn my teaching degree.

Thankfully, with my mother's help, and with the understanding of her banker who allowed her many bank loans over the years, I did achieve my goal of becoming a teacher and thoroughly enjoyed my years working with children.

Since I left Greenville, I've done my best each year to make whatever donations I could to help with students who are struggling financially as I did. I am thankful for the alumni who were helping to support the college during the years I attended and it is important for me now to do my part and give back in whatever way I can.
